Artifact: Internet Lesson Plan - ITEC 7430
Reflection:
The artifact that best represents 2.1, Content Standards & Student Technology Standards, is an internet lesson plan that was designed for ITEC 7430. This lesson plan was designed using third grade Social Studies and Language Arts content standards along with five NETS Standards. The ISTE’s Lesson Plan for implementing NETS template was used to design this lesson plan. The focus of the lesson plan was famous Americans. Four essential questions were chosen to guide the lesson along with an assessment component for students to illustrate their learning. The lesson plan also included necessary resources, instructional plan preparation, management, instructional strategies and learning activities.
The attached artifact demonstrates mastery of 2.1, Content Standards and Student Technology Standards, because the lesson was designed to address specific third grade social studies, language arts, and five technology standards. By incorporating content and technology standards, an authentic, engaging, and informative task was designed for students to complete. Students were given a choice of two different projects they could complete using the information they gathered on their famous American using NetTrekker. Students could choose to complete an audio projects or a slideshow of free use pictures gathered using Flickr. For the audio project, students learned how to use Audacity recording the information they gathered. Students who chose the slideshow used Movie Maker. After watching a short demonstration on how to use Movie Maker, students gathered free to use pictures using Flickr and added facts and information to each slide and appropriate music. The students posted their projects to a class Wiki site and were able to share their project with their peers and outside audiences. Students viewed and provided feedback to their classmates’ projects.
The NETS standards addressed in this project are Creativity and Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, Research and Information Fluency, Technology Operations and Concepts, and Digital Citizenship. Each of these standards were addressed using a variety of strategies and multimedia tools. Students selected the correct internet tool to research, record, and present the information on the famous American they chose to research. The information each student gathered on his/her famous American using NetTrekker was guided by the content standards that required them to discuss the lives of a selected group of famous Americans, describe their cultural and geographic systems, explain how they adapted to or influenced their environment, and how they displayed positive character traits. Incorporating two language arts standards, describing the relationship between a series of historical events and writing an informative/explanatory text, also helped guide the planning of the writing and speaking components for each project. The rubric used to grade each student’s project was created using the content and technology standards.
As a result of completing this artifact, I feel better prepared to design authentic and engaging lessons that are directly aligned to content and technology standards. If I were to go back and teach this lesson again, I would not post the projects to my class Wiki site. The Wiki site was not very friendly when trying to post and it was very difficult for multiple students to comment on the projects. I would use a different location such as my school website to post these projects instead of the Wiki.
