6.3 Field Experiences
Candidates engage in appropriate field experiences to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these standards. (PSC 6.3)
Artifact: Field Experience
Reflection:
During my time at KSU, I have engaged in many different field experiences to synthesize and apply content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions learned throughout the instructional technology Ed.S. program. Every ITEC class has required a structured and unstructured field experience to apply the skills learned throughout the semester. Structured field experiences required at least fifteen hours and the unstructured field experience required at least five hours. The field experiences completed have ranged from kindergarten to twelfth grade with two experiences focused on special education and ELL students.
The structured field experience completed for ITEC 7460 best demonstrates mastery of standard 6.3. The structured field experience documents the planning, creating, and implementation process of a professional learning workshop which was required for this class. On the field experience log, dates and the amount of time spent on activities focused on the professional learning workshop were recorded. A brief description of the activities and their alignment to state and national standards are also included on the field experience log. After completing the field experience, three reflection questions were answered to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge and skills learned as a result of completing the field experience.
All the field experiences completed during my course of study at KSU have been beneficial in helping me to apply the skills I’ve learned through assigned readings, class discussions, and module activities. Required field experiences have pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and work with students that I normally would not have the opportunity to work with. This has been very insightful and helpful in preparing me to become a K-12 instructional technology coach. For multiple field experiences, I worked with students in the K-5th grade setting. If given the opportunity to improve this artifact and make it more meaningful, I would go back and include more 6 – 12th grade experiences.
Field experiences like this have allowed me the opportunity to put into practice what I have learned throughout the instructional technology program at KSU. As a result of this program, I have acquired the necessary skills to be a knowledgeable and effective instructional technology coach. Through this program I have learned more about technology and how to incorporate a variety of Web 2.0 tools than I could have ever imagined. Most importantly, I’ve learned about myself as a person, teacher, and professional. I am very excited about what the future holds and how I can implement the skills I’ve learned to create and present standards based lessons with technology embedded throughout to create authentic and meaningful learning experiences for my students.
