Artifact: Technology Workshop on Using QR Codes int he Classroom - ITEC 7460
Narrative Description of Workshop
Reflection:
The QR codes professional learning workshop that was designed and implemented for ITEC 7460 best represents standard 5.2. This artifact was created after collaborating with third grade teachers and identifying a need for professional learning focused on using iPads to enhance their learning centers. With a class set of iPads, the teachers wanted to learn fun, engaging, and educational activities they could easily incorporate during learning centers.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 5.2 because the professional learning workshop was developed and implement to support teachers in integrating technology in their classroom. The workshop was designed to address state and nations professional learning standards. A Weebly site was created to help guide the face-to-face professional learning workshop and to provide an easy to use online component that teachers could refer to after the workshop was concluded. The Weebly site housed instructional videos, online resources, how-to instructions for installing and using QR readers, and handouts from the workshop. Five QR code activities were included on the Weebly site and were presented during the workshop. All necessary materials were included on the website to make implementation easy for the teachers.
During the workshop, an activating strategy was used to get the participants engaged. Next, the participants were walked through the process of using QR codes using the Weebly site on the SMART board. After watching a short informative video on using QR codes in the classroom, the teachers used an iPad to search and download a free QR reader. Next, the teachers watched a demonstration on how to scan a QR code and complete the linked activity. After observing, the teachers moved around the room and practiced scanning QR codes and completing the related activities. Lastly, the teachers observed how to generate a QR code and had time before the workshop concluded to generate and share a few of their own. Before leaving, the teachers scanned a QR code to take a quick survey to evaluate the professional learning workshop.
I really enjoyed developing and implementing this professional learning workshop on QR codes. The teachers were really enthusiastic and excited to learn how to use and generate QR codes. If I could add something to improve this workshop, I would add more QR code activities. I provided the teachers with five activities ready to use in their classroom. Two QR codes for reading, one for ELA, one for math, and one for science. I would add more codes for math and at least two QR codes for science and social studies. One thing that I learned by completing this artifact is that having the Weebly site to guide and house all related materials made the workshop easy to implement. Having all the materials in one place was user friendly and a great resource for teachers to use after the workshop. I would suggest to other coaches to use some sort of external site like a Weebly site to organize information and resources for future workshops.
This artifact had a positive impact on professional development. This encouraged and prepared teachers to incorporate QR codes in their classrooms to enhance their learning centers. The teachers learned important skills and knowledge needed to feel comfortable and confident in implementing these skills and tools in their classroom. The impact of this professional learning workshop was assessed by surveys and could also be evaluated in the future by classroom observations.
