2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
Artifact: Multimedia Design Project Report - ITEC 7445
Reflection:
The artifact that best demonstrates mastery of standard 2.6 is the Multimedia Design Report that was used to plan, design, develop and reflect on the Paul Revere WebQuest that was created as a capstone project for ITEC 7445. This report documents the analysis, development, implementation, evaluation, and a reflection process of the project. Many research-based best practices in instructional design were implemented when planning and developing this project that was learned throughout the ITEC 7445 course. The WebQuest was designed to address a number of social studies and ELA content standards. By implementing many digital tools and resources, students were able to analyze many different resources to summarize Paul Revere’s famous Ride. They used the information they collected to identify different character traits that described him along with evidence to prove their choices. Lastly, students argued whether they believed Paul Revere should be considered a famous American or not. Students were able to defend their answers using the evidence they collected from resources and links provided throughout the WebQuest.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 2.6 because the digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences were effectively designed and developed with research-based best practices in instructional design in mind. The WebQuest format is consistent and it is easy to maneuver from one page to another. The text and pictures are easy to read, appealing and the color scheme works well together. A Voki is included on multiple pages and it makes the WebQuest more interactive and engaging. It also provides assistance to students who struggle in the area of reading because it reads the text aloud. All the links are in working condition and open in a new window which makes it easy for students to continue on with their assignment. Before creating the WebQuest, the students, context, and task were observed and analyzed to determine what would be best to meet the needs of the students in the class. The WebQuest and all resources chosen were age appropriated and engaging. Tasks and resources were carefully chosen so they were authentic and complement the information presented in the third grade ELA unit based on the book, And Then What Happened Paul Revere, while addressing state social studies and ELA content standards.
This type of project has a positive impact on student learning because it finds a more engaging and authentic way to teach students content. Through this interactive WebQuest, students get to go back in time and pretend to live during Paul Revere’s lifetime. The videos, internet resources, and the Voki to guide their adventure brings history to life. As a result their learning is increased and social studies and ELA scores increase.
This project report was very beneficial in helping me design and develop my WebQuest. Throughout ITEC 7445, I have learned a lot about the importance of design principal and this capstone project was a great way for me to practice using some of the tools and design elements that I learned about. This project helped me learn that the design of a WebQuest is very important and can positively or negatively affect the learner. To improve this project, I would incorporate more videos on Paul Revere. I feel the videos included in the WebQuest are more commonly viewed on the Internet, so it would be helpful to have videos the students may not have seen before. Due to time constraints, I did not have time to search and view videos that may be more suiting than the ones that were used.
