Artifact: Copyright Assignment - ITEC 7445
Reflection:
The copyright assignment designed for ITEC 7430 is a great artifact for standard 4.2. This assignment was designed to educate others on copyright laws and how to abide by them. According to the U.S. Copyright Office (2012), "Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States to the authors of original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works.” Many educators infringe on copyright laws every day because they do not understand copyright laws. This PowerPoint was created to help make copyright more understandable and applicable to school situations so teachers gain a better understanding of the laws.
This artifact best demonstrates mastery of standard 4.2 because it facilitates the legal uses of digital information and technologies in schools. The copyright PowerPoint defines copyright, explains what it means, and explains what is protected under copyright laws. The PowerPoint specifically addresses how copyright affects the use of videos in classrooms. Videos are commonly used in classrooms and it is important for teachers to understand how to legally implement them. Under Fair Use guidelines, teachers may use videos in the classroom under these conditions: 1) Videos are used in the classroom or non-profit environment. 2) The material is legitimately acquitted. 3) Use is instructional, not entertainment or reward. 4) It is ok to copy only if replacements are unavailable at fair price or in a viable format. The PowerPoint provides three different scenarios to practice deciding if infringement of copyright laws have occurred.
Completing this assignment was a true learning experience. Prior to learning about copyright, I did not clearly understand how it affected me as a classroom teacher but this has helped me to become more aware of copyright laws and how to abide by them. It is not only important that I follow these laws but also educate and model this behavior for my students. To improve this assignment, I would add more scenarios for teachers to practice applying copyright laws. I only added three in the PowerPoint, but I think it would be beneficial to have five.
Educating teachers about copyright is very important and this PowerPoint would be an effective tool to use during a professional development session to educate teachers. It is important for teachers to be aware of copyright laws and understand what is legal and what is not. To assess the effectiveness of the professional development session on copyright, observations could be used to assess if teachers are following copyright laws as well as district copyright policies. Surveys could also be used to assess teacher’s knowledge of copyright and areas that need to be addressed.
