Artifact: Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project - ITEC 7445
Reflection:
Collaborating with teachers and administrators at Sunset School, iPads were chosen as a very important emerging technology. By using the evaluating emerging technologies project designed in ITEC 7445, iPads were researched to gather helpful information to explain how iPads could be used to support the school’s vision and how to implement this emerging technological tool in the classrooms most effectively to support student achievement.
This project best demonstrates mastery of standard 3.6 because iPads were researched and information was collected to create a PowerPoint to share with school administrators and staff members to help them make an informed decision on selecting iPads. The PowerPoint begins by defining an iPad and why they should be incorporated at Sunset Elementary School. IPads support Sunset’s school vision because they can spark an interest in students and provide all learners with engaging and educational content, which in return, will produce productive and cooperative life-long learners equipped with technology skills for the 21st Century. IPads also promote specific student learning goals and assist in meeting the needs of all students. The use of iPads in the class can promote collaboration, increase student engagement and support creative and critical thinking skills.
Completing this project was a true learning experience. IPads are an emerging technology that is appearing in schools around the country. With a high price tag, it is important for school to research and evaluate if iPads are the best technology tool for meeting the school’s needs. I learned a lot of valuable information about iPads and how they can be used to promote collaboration in the classroom, many of which I have incorporated into my lessons since completing this project. If I could change or add something to this project, I would have like to have surveyed teachers on their opinion of iPads prior to the presentation and after the presentation to see if it had an impact on their opinion of the effectiveness of iPads in the classroom. It would also be interesting to hear what they found to be the most interesting or important idea they learned about iPads.
This artifact could affect Sunset’s professional learning in a positive way. First, it is important for teachers to have some input in choosing new technology tools that will be purchased for them to implement in their classroom. By researching and presenting important information on the technology tool helps to evaluate if the tool is truly effective in increasing student achievement and meeting the needs of the staff and school. This could be evaluated by implementing teacher surveys after the professional development session.
