Artifact: Literature Review - ITEC 7410
Reflection:
An artifact that best represents standard 6.1 is the literature review that was completed for EDRS 8000 to research the effectiveness of the Fast-ForWord computer based reading intervention program. The literature review was created using information collected from peer-reviewed journal articles. The literature review provided information and past research on the Fast ForWord program and the effects the program has had, if any, on struggling readers.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of standard 6.1 because continual growth in knowledge and skills of the Fast ForWord computer based reading intervention program along with other computer based intervention programs. The research learned through this literature review was valuable in identifying and evaluating the Fast ForWord program and how effective it is in helping to improve the reading skills of struggling readers. Over fifteen articles were read and used to establish literature to support the need to further research the effectiveness of the Fast ForWord computer based intervention program.
Completing this artifact was beneficial because it helped me to acquire information and research on the effectiveness of the Fast ForWord program that would later help build the foundation for my research project implemented in RSCH 8900. The information learned also helped me to better evaluate the effectiveness of the Fast ForWord program that was currently being implemented at my school. To improve this artifact, I would collect more articles to help evaluate the effectiveness of the Fast ForWord program on improving specific reading skills instead of fluency only.
The literature review had a positive effect on my professional practice. It better prepared me to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of emerging technologies. In the future I will also be better prepared to locate and analyze peer-reviewed journal articles to gather information and research on topics in the future that can help me improve my personal productivity and professional practice. The effectiveness of this artifact is hard to assess but self-reflection and classroom performance would be the best way to evaluate its effectiveness. Reading current research articles is important for teachers to stay abreast emerging research-based strategies and practices that could help improve professional practice and student performance.
